Embark on an unforgettable Taormina shore excursion that combines the awe-inspiring natural wonder of Mount Etna with the historic charm of Taormina, two of Sicily’s most iconic destinations. This full-day tour will take you through volcanic landscapes, ancient ruins, and some of the island's most breathtaking views.
Your adventure begins with a comfortable drive from Taormina Port to Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. After a scenic 1-hour drive, we’ll begin our ascent to the Silvestri Crater, located at an altitude of about 6,000 feet. Here, you’ll have your first view of the volcanic terrain—an otherworldly landscape of black lava fields and craters stretching as far as the eye can see.
Mount Etna
Mount Etna, known to the ancient Greeks as the home of Hephaestus (or Vulcan to the Romans), rises nearly 11,000 feet above the surrounding countryside. One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Etna has been continuously shaping the landscape with its eruptions for millennia. Famous for its various eruption styles, the fertile volcanic soil surrounding Etna supports vineyards, orchards, and a thriving honey production industry. Over time, Mount Etna has inspired countless myths and legends, including tales of gods, nymphs, and monsters who were said to be the source of its fiery eruptions.
Taormina
After exploring Mount Etna, you’ll head back down the slopes and make your way to the charming town of Taormina, perched high above the Ionian Sea. Founded by the Greeks around the 8th century BC, Taormina is famous for its stunning coastal views and remarkable historical sites. One of the most notable attractions is the Greek Theatre, dating back to the 3rd century BC. Originally constructed by the Greeks and later expanded by the Romans, this ancient theatre offers breathtaking panoramic views of both the coastline and Mount Etna in the distance.
While in Taormina, you’ll also want to visit Palazzo Corvaja, a medieval mansion that blends Arab, Norman, and Gothic architectural styles. It now houses a museum dedicated to Sicilian arts and crafts, providing an enriching glimpse into the island’s fascinating history and culture.
If shopping and relaxation are more your pace, take a leisurely stroll down Corso Umberto, Taormina’s main street, lined with chic boutiques, cafes, and beautiful historic buildings. Here, you can explore vibrant shops or simply enjoy a coffee in one of the many charming cafes. Don’t forget to visit Piazza IX Aprile, the town’s main square, where you can relax and take in the stunning views of the sea and Mount Etna.
At the end of this memorable Taormina excursion, you’ll be driven back to Taormina Port, having experienced the best of Sicily’s natural beauty, rich history, and Mediterranean charm.
