Join us for an unforgettable Catania excursion that combines the ancient wonders of Siracusa with the charm of Taormina, two of Sicily's most captivating destinations. This full-day excursion will take you through layers of history, from the ancient Greek era to the Baroque period, along with stunning landscapes and seaside views.
Siracusa (Syracuse)
Founded in the 8th century BC by Greek settlers, Siracusa quickly became one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world, rivaling even Athens in its wealth and influence. The famous mathematician Archimedes was born here, and Cicero once called it "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all." Today, Siracusa is a living testament to the island’s rich history, where ancient Greek civilization is still very much alive in its architecture and archaeological sites. The Neapolis Archaeological Park is home to some of the most remarkable ancient ruins, including the Greek Theatre, built in the 5th century BC, which is a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Another highlight is Ortigia, the island that forms the historic heart of Siracusa. A delightful maze of narrow Medieval streets, Ortigia is a beautiful place to explore. The Piazza Duomo is dominated by Baroque architecture, but the Cathedral of Syracuse, built over an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Athena, showcases the city's layers of history. At the edge of the island stands Castello Maniace, a 13th-century fortress offering breathtaking views of the surrounding sea. And if you're a fan of Greek mythology, don’t miss Fonte Arethusa, a freshwater spring where the nymph Arethusa is said to have been transformed into water by the goddess Artemis to escape the advances of the river god Alpheus. For a truly immersive Sicilian experience, wander through the vibrant farmer's market, where the smells, sights, and colors of fresh produce and local delicacies fill the air.
Taormina
After exploring Siracusa, we’ll continue our journey to Taormina, one of Sicily’s most beautiful and historic towns. Known for its picturesque charm, Taormina has long been a favorite destination for travelers seeking a mix of history, culture, and stunning scenery. The town’s most famous landmark is the Greek Theatre, a spectacular ancient venue offering magnificent views of the coastline and Mount Etna. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, the theatre was later expanded by the Romans, but it’s the views of the sea and the volcano that truly make it unforgettable. While in Taormina, take some time to explore its charming streets, especially Corso Umberto, where you’ll find boutique shops, cafes, and lovely architecture. Don’t miss Piazza IX Aprile, the town's main square, known for its sweeping views and photogenic surroundings.
Other highlights include Palazzo Corvaja, a beautiful medieval building that mixes Arab, Norman, and Gothic architectural styles, and now houses a museum of Sicilian arts and crafts.
After a day of discovery, we’ll return you to Catania Port, filled with memories of Siracusa's ancient ruins and Taormina's timeless beauty. This Catania shore excursion offers a full day of history, culture, and stunning scenery, perfect for anyone looking to experience the best of Sicily’s past and present.
