This historic region, renowned for its rich Etruscan heritage, rises over 400 feet above sea level, providing stunning views of the Marta River valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Tarquinia

Upon arriving in Tarquinia, you'll find a town steeped in medieval charm, with roots extending deep into antiquity. Established by the Etruscans well before the rise of Rome, Tarquinia flourished as a prosperous trade centre from the 8th century B.C., becoming one of the most significant Etruscan cities.

The Etruscans

Curious about the Etruscans? This fascinating civilization inhabited central Italy prior to Rome's ascendancy. Known for their exquisite craftsmanship in jewellery, sculpture, and pottery—often reminiscent of ancient Greek art—they also created elaborate necropolises to honour their dead and protect their belongings. Etruria, the ancient homeland of the Etruscans, was vital for its fertile lands and strategic trade routes, contributing significantly to the development of this remarkable culture.

Just outside Tarquinia lies one of Italy’s most captivating Etruscan necropolises, where you can admire wall paintings that rival those of ancient Egypt. Within the town, the majestic Palazzo Vitelleschi houses what is considered the greatest Etruscan Museum in the world. Here, you’ll find an impressive collection of well-preserved sarcophagi, paintings, tombs, and frescoes dating from the 6th to 1st centuries B.C., which are not to be missed.

Tuscania

After a delightful lunch at a local trattoria—or at the optional Fattoria Valle del Marta for an additional cost—you’ll continue to Tuscania, another significant city within the ancient Etruscan federation. This charming town feels like an open-air museum, with decorative figures from sarcophagi enhancing various viewpoints.

In Parco Torre di Lavello, you’ll discover a quaint Etruscan fountain, framed by the iconic basilica of San Pietro rising in the background. Built on the site of an ancient Etruscan acropolis, this church began construction in the 8th century and showcases a remarkable blend of architectural styles along with its stunning 13th-century façade. Nearby, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore is also worth a visit, featuring two striking free-standing columns inspired by the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.

Join us for this enriching Civitavecchia excursion and delve into the captivating world of the Etruscans while exploring the timeless beauty of Tarquinia and Tuscania!
