Discover Tarquinia

Arriving in Tarquinia, you'll find a town steeped in history, with roots tracing back to the Etruscans. Established as a bustling trade centre in the 8th century B.C., Tarquinia became one of the most significant cities of Etruscan civilization.

Understanding the Etruscans

The Etruscans were an intriguing and enigmatic people who thrived in central Italy before the rise of Rome. Renowned for their intricate jewellery, sculpture, and pottery, they also created elaborate necropolises to honour their dead. The necropolises near Tarquinia are among the most remarkable in Italy, featuring wall paintings that rival those of ancient Egypt. Be sure to visit the exceptional Etruscan Museum housed in the grand Palazzo Vitelleschi, which showcases a rich collection of sarcophagi, paintings, and frescoes from the 6th to 1st centuries B.C.

Visit Tuscania

After a leisurely lunch at a local trattoria, your journey continues to Tuscania, another key city in the ancient Etruscan federation. This picturesque town acts as an open-air museum, adorned with motifs from sarcophagi that enhance its scenic viewpoints.

In Parco Torre di Lavello, you’ll find a simple Etruscan fountain, with the basilica of San Pietro (Saint Peter) rising in the background. Constructed on the site of the old Etruscan acropolis, this church began in the 8th century and features a stunning 13th-century façade. Don’t miss Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major), where two free-standing columns at its entrance draw inspiration from the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.

Join us for this enriching Civitavecchia shore excursion to delve into the fascinating history and culture of the Etruscans! Please note that entrance fees and lunch are not included.
